Leafmend privacy policy
Last updated October 27, 2026
Leafmend looks at photos of your plants and tells you what the plant is, whether anything is wrong with it, and how to fix it. This page explains what happens to your photos and the little other information the app needs.
Your photos and questions
When you run a check, the photos you chose and any note you typed are sent over an encrypted connection to our server (hosted by Cloudflare). Our server passes them to two services, waits for the answer, and sends it back to your phone. Our server does not store your photos, notes, results or chat messages.
- Pl@ntNet (a plant-identification service run by French research institutes) receives the photos to suggest which species it is. Pl@ntNet says it keeps the photos only in memory while it identifies them and does not store them.
- Anthropic (the company behind the Claude AI) receives the photos, your note, Pl@ntNet's suggestions and, for follow-up questions, the conversation so far, and writes the diagnosis and answers. Anthropic does not use this data to train its models and deletes it within 30 days, except where it must keep it longer to enforce its usage policies or by law.
If you check the same plant again, a short summary of the earlier result (the date, health status and problem names) is sent along so the AI can say whether the plant is improving.
What stays on your phone
Your plants, photos, results and chats are saved only in the app's storage on your phone. Deleting a plant in the app, or uninstalling the app, deletes them.
What our server keeps
- An install ID: a random code the app makes for itself, used to hold your credits and Plus subscription. It isn't linked to your name, email or Google account.
- Your phone's app ID (Android's ID for this app on this phone), used to count your free checks each month so they can't be reset by reinstalling.
- Counts: how many checks and questions you used each day and month, and what each one cost us to run. For each check we keep an ID, how it was paid for (free, credit or Plus), how many questions were asked, how many photos it had, how long it took, and a short summary of the result: the plant's scientific name, its health rating and the kinds of problems found (for example "watering, pests"). Never the photos, your note or the full answer.
- Purchases: which product you bought, the date, and Google Play's order number and purchase token, so we can confirm the purchase with Google and give you what you paid for. Payment details are handled by Google; we never see your card.
- Reports: if you tap "Report this answer", the text of that answer, the reason you picked and anything you typed. Your photos are not included.
We don't collect your name, email address, contacts, precise location or advertising ID. Cloudflare, which runs our server, sees your IP address to deliver each request and may keep standard request logs for a short time; we don't store IP addresses ourselves.
Anonymous usage
To see how Leafmend is used and what to improve, the counts above are kept per phone under a random number made from a one-way scramble of the phone's app ID (it can't be turned back into the ID). Unless you turn it off, the app also sends:
- which parts of the app were used each day (for example "opened Plans", "took a photo", "asked a question"), and how often;
- the app version, and your phone's maker, model and Android version;
- approximate location: the country, and in the US the state, that your internet connection comes from, using Cloudflare's lookup. Never your city, address or precise location, and the app never asks for location permission.
Never photos, names or anything you type. Turn it off in Settings → Share anonymous usage; the app then stops sending it, and our server deletes your phone's model, location and that history. Counts kept for running checks, questions and purchases stay. Daily history is deleted after about 13 months.
How it's used and shared
This information is used only to run Leafmend: to answer your checks, apply your free checks, credits and Plus, and review reported answers, and, as anonymous totals, to understand and improve the app. It isn't sold, used for advertising, or shared with anyone except the services named above that do the work. The app has no ads and no third-party analytics.
Deleting your data
Delete plants in the app, or uninstall it, to remove everything on your phone. To have our server delete your install ID, counts, purchase records and reports, see how to delete your data. Credits and Plus can't be restored after that.
Children
Leafmend is meant for a general audience and isn't directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children.
